Coral reefs are large underwater habitats of calcium carbonate skeletons produced over time by coral polyps. They are critically important to tropical coastlines and often referred to as ‘rainforests of the sea’, occupying less than 0.1% of the ocean floor, yet host 25% of the world’s marine species.
