Nestled beside the OPP Beach Hub, the OPP Herb Garden is a living demonstration of how healthy oceans can support healthier land. Home to Singapore's first seaweed carbon sequestration site, the garden transforms harvested seaweed into natural biofertilisers and biostimulants that nourish traditional herbs.
As a space for research, education, and community engagement, the garden showcases the connection between ocean, soil, plant, and human health while inspiring sustainable living through regenerative gardening and biodiversity conservation.
The Ocean–Soil–Plant–Human Connection
Nature's ecosystems are deeply interconnected. Healthy oceans support healthy soils, which nourish healthy plants that ultimately contribute to healthier communities.
At Ocean Purpose Project, this circular relationship was brought to life from 2018 through OPP's award winning Bioremediation pillar via two Singaporean complementary initiatives- Project Langsir and Project Tanah Air.
Drawing from oral history recollections from villagers of Kampong Pasir Ris, descendants of indigenous people who lived in these mangroves and combining academic and industry knowledge on IMTA or integrated multi-trophic aquaculture and bioremediation programmes, these proposals have been sent to major government agencies in Singapore such as Singapore Food Agency, Ministry of Sustainability & Environment, Singapore Coastguard, Pasir Ris Changi Town Council, National Parks Singapore and more. Together, they demonstrate how restoring one part of nature creates benefits across the entire ecosystem.
Project Langsir: Nature-Based marine restoration
Project Langsir (Malay for "curtain") is Ocean Purpose Project's flagship coastal bioremediation initiative that harnesses the natural filtering abilities of native seaweed and mussels to improve seawater quality. Since 2020, Ocean Purpose Project has repeatedly called for pragmatic solutions to the algae and bacteria bloom issues in the Johor Straits and Pasir Ris waters. As Singapore's first large-scale seaweed and mussel bioremediation initiative, Project Langsir showcases how science, partnerships, and community action can work together to build healthier, more resilient coastal environments. It has been presented to Singapore Food Agency, Singapore Coastguard, MPA and other government agencies as a tangible solution to repeated algae blooms in the Johor Strait, utilising an existing infrastructure of 1000 navigation blue barrels in the middle of the Johor Strait to create Singapore’s first seaweed and mussel bioremediation curtain powered by floating solar PV with realtime publicly available sea environment data dashboards with seawater quality sensors, booms to prevent oil spills and plastics influx. By deploying a series of floating bioremediation lines along the Pasir Ris coastline, we are creating a living "curtain" that absorbs excess nutrients, filters pollutants, and provides a biodiversity tableau and habitat for marine life. By working with nature, Project Langsir demonstrates how nature-based solutions can complement urban coastal management, reduce pollution on multiple fronts, piggyback existing infrastructure, supporting cleaner coastal waters, enhanced marine biodiversity, and ongoing research in blue carbon and coastal ecosystem restoration. Through education, citizen science, and conservation activities, the project also engages local communities in protecting marine ecosystems.
Project Tanah Air: From Ocean to Soil to Plants
Once the seaweed and mussels have grown after a duration of 3-6 months, these materials are harvested, tested for heavy metals and trace mineral before being send to Singapore's 1st blue carbon sequestration site at the OPP Herb garden to be turned into fertilisers.
Through Project Tanah Air ("tanah" the Malay word for land, "air" the Malay word for water, "Tanah Air" being the malay word for homeland), harvested seaweed and mussels are sent to SGS labs for testing and subsequently transformed into natural biocomposts, biostimulants and biofertilisers that support regenerative gardening and healthier soil ecosystems. Applied in the OPP Herb Garden, these seaweed-based solutions have been proven by our bespoke research and academic partnerships to help improve nutrient uptake, strengthen root growth, and enhance plant resilience in not just fruit trees and vegetables but plant based medicinals.
Combined with compost made from seaweed, fallen leaves, and other organic materials, they have helped transform an underutilised area into a thriving ecosystem with approximately one foot of restored healthy topsoil. Today, the garden serves as a living demonstration of how marine restoration, regenerative gardening, and nature-based innovation can support healthier plants, richer biodiversity, and more resilient communities through our Ocean–Soil–Plant–Human approach.
